The undeniable claim of the foreign presents a philosophical challenge. This study attempts to confront this challenge by exploring the extent to which it is possible to engage with the foreign without negating it through appropriation. The claim of the foreign touches upon an impossibility, hinted at in terms such as absence, inaccessibility, or inviolability. Since there would be nothing to say or do without the foreign, which eludes access, that has not already been fundamentally said or done, the foreign claim acts as an antidote to all attempts at rationalization and normalization that overlook their origins and, in the course of mere preservation of reason or system, unleash those irrational forces that they pretend to banish.
