With the insight that "violence is not an object of polemics, madness is not a subject of satire," Karl Kraus justified his silence in the face of the horror that emerged with Hitler's rise to power. The attempt to account for this failure was to appear in the fall of 1933 in four hundred pages of "Die Fackel"; however, because the text unexpectedly turned into a reckoning with the Nazi regime, the publication of which could have endangered lives, it remained unpublished. Today, the horrified diagnosis that Kraus made about the Third Reich in "The Third Walpurgis Night" appears as a prognosis of Stalingrad and Auschwitz and can thus also serve as a compelling proof of the possibility that World War and the Holocaust were already discernible in the events described in the text from the early months of the regime.
