Michel Foucault was a philosopher and historian, the founder of a specific variant of discourse analysis, but not a media scholar. He never recommended his writings as "recipes" for any way of thinking or even for a particular discipline; instead, he preferred to call them "tools" and even "dreams." This reflects an experimental attitude cultivated by Foucault, which was influential in both his major treatises and his essays, lectures, and occasional remarks on painting and photography, music and cinema, the order of discourse, and the noise of information technologies.
