The nightmare is the flip side of the dream, its painful price. This was also experienced by those who fled the Holocaust in the 1930s and 1940s and arrived in Palestine; stranded in an inhospitable landscape under British mandate administration, where dreams of a Jewish state were only slowly realized. In 1974/75, Amos Oz wrote three stories about the experiences of these Jewish immigrants. The first story, "The Mountain of Evil Counsel," takes place in May 1946 and depicts how Palestine becomes the beloved or forced final destination of an escape for Dr. Kipnis and his wife for different reasons. In "Mr. Levi," it is late summer 1947, and Amos Oz narrates the Jewish resistance against the English administration. This is immediately followed by "Longing," but the circumstances have changed.
