The contributions included in this volume primarily address the inseparable tension between freedom, equality, and security as the central guiding ideas and fundamental values of social security. On one hand, there are fundamental critiques of the welfare state regarding the unacceptable restriction of individual freedoms of citizens, and on the other hand, there are demands for a further expansion of social security, albeit in a modified form. Using the examples of old-age security and public healthcare, the tensions and contradictions of the normative foundations of the modern welfare state and the challenges of establishing a hierarchy of values are concretized.
