Modern ontology since Kant and Frege assumes that existence is not a (ordinary) property. This reformulates the old question of the meaning of being within a changed framework. However, it is assumed that the meaning of "existence" can be understood without reference to categories of meaning. At the same time, existence is linked to logical functions such as the existential quantifier or the concept of sets. Against these assumptions, Markus Gabriel presents in his original new book an ontology of fields of meaning: To exist means to appear in a field of meaning. Surprisingly, according to Gabriel, this precisely supports a new realism in ontology.
