In this work, Goodman examines, among other things, the conventionality of perspective; he formulates a theory of metaphor and, against the backdrop of his theory of notation, enables the establishment of a strict concept of work. However, the novelty in his philosophy of art lies in the recognition of the significant role of exemplification; it is one of the important ways in which artworks function. The process of exemplification is not only crucial for understanding abstract art, but it has also seemingly reached distant disciplines such as anthropology, where it is being tested alongside denotation for the description and classification of ritual behavior.
