First published in 1965, Tiedemann's book remains the only comprehensive representation of Walter Benjamin's philosophy to this day. Long out of print, it is now being reissued unchanged. According to Tiedemann, Benjamin's thought, while vigorously shedding the habits of all school philosophy, still adheres to a specific philosophical formal law. Understanding this formal law, which is rarely encountered in the history of philosophy prior to Benjamin, coincides with the truth content of Benjamin's work. While Tiedemann limits himself to a few central complexes and is cautious of the ominous ideal of completeness, his focus has nonetheless succeeded in demonstrating the unity, strict coherence, and constitutive power of Benjamin's thought. After this work, it will no longer be possible for anyone to hide behind the argument.
