"What cannot be talked about must be written in a novel," is the life and survival maxim of A. F. Th. van der Heijden. It is the only way he can confront the fate of his 22-year-old son. Tonio van der Heijden died on May 23, 2010, in Amsterdam: a car ran over him early in the morning on his way home. In a two-part novel, the first six years of his son's life are found and invented by the first-person narrator, Adri, from his birth in June 1988 until he starts school. This part of the novel adheres to the motto: hold on to the son, protect him from all dangers. The second part constructs, in the form of a crime novel, the completely illogical circumstances surrounding Tonio's death. In this way, a touching and moving novel about misfortune in its purest form has emerged, exploring the incomprehensibility of the unimaginable.
