Analytical philosophy represents a significant philosophical movement of the second half of the last century. In addition to a critique of metaphysical concepts, the various forms of Analytical Philosophy agree in their focus on language. Dummett examines the origins of this linguistic turn in his now-classic study, which he believes are not so much rooted in English empiricism, but rather, alongside Frege, primarily in Brentano and early Husserl. Dummett is convinced that a philosophical explanation of thought can only be achieved through a philosophical analysis of language—a conviction he shares not only with Wittgenstein but also with philosophers like Quine and Davidson.
