Product details

Dolf Sternberger and Jürgen Habermas developed the concept of constitutional patriotism as a response to the situation of the Federal Republic after World War II. As all forms of culturally or ethnically motivated patriotism were discredited, they advocated for a rational identification with the universal values and principles of the Basic Law. Is this form of patriotism capable of fostering solidarity and collective identification in the post-national constellation, where nation-states become culturally more diverse due to migration and where political competencies are transferred to supranational entities like the European Union? Jan-Werner Müller explores this question in his precise historical reconstruction of ideas. I know of no more precise and careful presentation of the political and historical context in which the debate takes place.
