Ronald Dworkin is one of the outstanding philosophers, whose works on egalitarianism are only surpassed by the work of John Rawls. With "What is Equality?", Dworkin's central texts are now available for the first time in German. They develop a theory of resource equality, according to which a society is just if all resources are equally distributed within it. For Dworkin, this does not mean that all people can achieve the same level of wealth or life satisfaction, nor that this would even be desirable. While a state should seek to compensate for individually unavoidable misfortunes, it is not its role to equalize the advantages and disadvantages that arise from personal decisions. Justice, as Dworkin's central thesis states, primarily requires an equal starting position for all.
