Ingeborg Bachmann referred to her major narrative project, which she clung to until the end, as "The Goldmann Book." It is now published in an edition that makes the fragmentarily transmitted work visible as a project of redemptive storytelling. This is made possible by an unusual synthesis of tragedy and cosmopolitan comedy that no longer requires victims.
