In "The Captive," Marcel, who at the end of "Sodom and Gomorrah" has decided to marry Albertine, takes her to his home and keeps her hidden from the eyes of the world. However, he soon realizes that this captivity gives way to a jealousy that turns him into the true prisoner. Unlike Swann, Marcel recognizes the mechanisms of this jealousy but cannot free himself from it. Instead, desires for other women and new travels awaken within him. When his weariness ultimately prevails and Marcel decides to leave Albertine, he discovers that she has anticipated him, and his supposed indifference is undermined by the pain of their separation.
