The film script "Zürich - Transit" is derived from an episode of the 1964 novel "My Name is Gantenbein": "A story for Camilla: about a man who is always determined to change his way of life, and of course he never succeeds..." But one day, he, Theo Ehrismann, returns from a stay abroad and reads his own obituary in the newspaper. He arrives just in time for the funeral and observes the mourners, but is unable to reveal himself to others, especially to his wife: "How does one say that one is alive?" Max Frisch contrasts the conventional, causally developing dramaturgy of texts with a dramaturgy of chance. Life, as Max Frisch stated in 1965, "is made up of actions that are often accidental, and it could always have been different; there is no action and inaction.".
