Locke was one of the first to formulate the postulates of the bourgeois freedom movement during the historical period when the bourgeoisie in England began to develop its social and political self-understanding in relation to a feudal-absolutist crown. He emphasized the right to self-development of the personality, which he based on the principle of the legitimate pursuit of happiness. He advocated for the right to private property based on work, which was seen as the material basis of bourgeois existence. Additionally, he argued for the prevention of the concentration of all political power in the hands of a single institution, such as the monarch, leading to the division of powers into legislative and executive branches, or the separation of powers. He also supported the right to tolerance in matters of faith and the right of the people to resist an absolutist power that seeks to infringe upon the rights of citizens to life, freedom, and property.
