Supply Chain Management (SCM) means a consistent process orientation for the efficient design of material and information flows within and between companies. Due to the structure of industries and sectors, there are different requirements regarding products, markets, technologies, and customers – and thus for supply chain design. However, the realization is associated with various barriers: In addition to designing cross-company processes, optimizing product design, and selecting the right IT systems and utilizing internet technology, the skills of employees are increasingly in focus. After an overview of the fundamentals of supply chain management, detailed case studies from DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Danzas, Hewlett-Packard, Osram, BASF, Merck, dm-drogerie markt, Sara Lee, and Procter & Gamble illustrate how SCM is successfully implemented in practice.
