A novel about rise and fall in the age of social media: 23-year-old Colleen has a dull job at a market research institute in Tucson, Arizona. She almost sleepwalks through a life filled with a monotonous work routine, exhausting one-night stands, and her never-finished apartment in a faceless apartment block on the outskirts. Colleen finds a brief thrill in charging for sex - but she only truly comes alive when she's online: in the digital world, she can reinvent herself, intoxicated by her own market value, which can be tracked by click counts. Colleen becomes an internet star when she is discovered by Jim, a semi-prominent social media icon of mysterious masculinity. She falls in love with him and moves to Los Angeles. The two of them now appear, carefully staged, as the It couple: celebrated by their fans, they hop from one sponsored party to the next, profiting as professional narcissists from the hype surrounding their image. But then Lucinda appears, who reinvents her online persona just as steadily as Colleen - only always a little bit better.
The novel reflects and deconstructs the classic female coming-of-age narrative. Chris Kraus, author of 'I Love Dick'.
Told in an extremely sober, reductionist style, 'Elevations' avoids direct descriptions of the virtual world and instead focuses on the anonymous hotel rooms and blacklight nightclubs that serve as its backdrop. Against this bland backdrop, the mechanisms of attention economy stand out with alarming clarity. New York Times.
The satire in 'Elevations' is bone-dry; the best lines could stretch cocaine. The most sober passages are the best in everyday minimalism on Valium, and then there are moments when Stagg lets her precise sense of the poetic in the mundane run free. 3:AM Magazine.
