Product details
Starting from the eponymous palace of Queen Sophie Charlotte, the development of Charlottenburg began over 300 years ago. Various neighborhoods emerged during this time. Taverns and shops around the market at today's Richard-Wagner-Platz and the Schlossstrasse, with houses for court officials, formed the core. The rural village of Lietzow was also included. On the outskirts of the old town, industrial workers lived in poor and cramped conditions, while bankers and industrialists resided in magnificent villas along the road to Berlin. In his exploration of the Charlottenburg old town, Berlin author Stephan Brandt presents over 200 mostly unpublished images showcasing proud merchants in front of their shops, recalls long-gone places like the Flora amusement park, and reveals lesser-known aspects of Charlottenburg Palace.
