Between the Randen Mountains in the southern Black Forest and the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen, the Sauschwänzlebahn winds down towards the Rhine in numerous bends, coming from the original river valley of the Danube. The line, opened in 1890, is a technical masterpiece of its time and crosses four large viaducts and passes through six tunnels, including the 1,600-meter-long Stockhalde circular tunnel. It is the only screw tunnel designed for two tracks on a mid-mountain railway in the world. Bernhard Prillwitz and Dietrich Reimer, the founders of the Blumberg Railway Museum, have selected over 150 historical photographs and documents from their extensive archive to illustrate the development and history of this extraordinary railway line. Originally designed for military purposes, the lovingly maintained museum railway now attracts over 100,000 visitors each year.
