Product details

Tourism in the Werdenfelser Land saw a tremendous increase after the opening of the railway line from Murnau to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on July 25, 1889. Summer vacationers, day-trippers, and mountain hikers took advantage of this opportunity to find relaxation here. The over 220 historical photographs and postcards in this volume document how the newly built cable cars assisted summer visitors in climbing Wank, Eckbauer, Hausberg, and Kreuzeck. Using impressive, mostly unpublished images from the archives of the cable and cogwheel railways and his own collection, Peter Blath traces the lives of the people and the technological development in this region. He observes the workers during the construction of the cogwheel railway and accompanies the mountaineer on his journey through the Partnach Gorge and the Höllental to the Zugspitze. Thus, both locals and visitors gain insight into this.
