Veddel is one of the most well-known districts of Hamburg, famous for the Ballinstadt and its workers' settlements, and it boasts an exciting and varied history. Dieter Thal, known for the Veddel storytelling café and exhibitions at the BallinStadt Museum, has been collecting photos and postcards of old Veddel residents for many years. From his collection, he has now selected over 160 mostly unpublished images from the period between 1868 and 1962. The impressive photos depict everyday life in this idyllic yet vibrant Hamburg district, which underwent significant changes following an incomprehensible demolition policy and the destruction of World War II: The houses of the Sloman settlement, built in 1878, are as elusive today as the residential buildings with their many shops in the northern part of Veddel, constructed in 1885, or the emigration city established from 1901.
