The growing prosperity of the emerging Ruhr area in the early 20th century played a crucial role in transforming Speldorf from a district of Mülheim characterized by agricultural estates into a popular villa suburb. Gabriele Scholz from Speldorf has selected the most interesting historical photographs from the collections of 46 private and public contributors. The largely unpublished images capture the working world and the vibrant club and social life of the Speldorfer between 1899 and 1970. In particular, the pictures document the leisure activities at Monning and the spa atmosphere at Raffelberg, the beloved green oasis in the heart of the Ruhr metropolitan area.
