This historical journey through images takes you along the Danube from Passau, passing through Linz, Krems, and Vienna to Hainburg. It guides the viewer through a cultural landscape that experienced a golden age as early as the Middle Ages. As numerous as the castles and monuments along the Danube are the legendary events that surround the old structures. Over 200 mostly unpublished images from private and public collections not only document the most beautiful sites along the river but also illustrate how the river has been utilized over the past 140 years, whether as a trade route, a source of food, or a reservoir for the electricity industry. The historical postcards depict bridges, ferries, and ships, as well as fascinating natural events such as floods and ice jams. The vivid images span the period from 1870 to 1960.
