Within international organizations, law enforcement is characterized by a tension arising from the submission of member states to the enforcement authority of a union of states that they themselves have established. The enforcement mechanisms provided for within the WTO are limited to compensations or the suspension of trade concessions and other obligations that correspond to the extent of the reduction of benefits. In contrast, the European Union has a highly integrated legal system that significantly differs from traditional international organizations. The Union law contains numerous provisions for imposing sanctions not only against member states but also against individual subjects of law. This book analyzes the sanctions provided for in each case.
