The members of the Papal Swiss Guard are among the most popular photo subjects in Rome, not least because of their uniforms. However, the guard duty at the entrances of the Vatican City is just a small glimpse into the lives of the soldiers, which remains hidden from most visitors to Rome. Photographer Oliver Sittel accompanied the guards with his camera for two years, capturing their service and daily lives. The moments captured in the images tell stories of duty, discipline, and camaraderie. At the same time, they offer fascinating glimpses behind the mysterious walls of the Vatican, showcasing how closely tradition and modernity are intertwined here.
