Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's late work has largely remained unexplored in connection with that of Edvard Munch. A detailed analysis of the relationship between Kirchner's series "Pictures from Imagination" and Munch's "Life Frieze" interestingly reveals similar contours in these two works. This is despite Kirchner's vehement attempts to deny any knowledge of Munch's creations. The significance of Munch's work for Kirchner is systematically demonstrated through the correspondence of the 'Brücke' with Munch, the Munch exhibitions, Kirchner's statements about Munch in letters, his sketchbooks, and the 'Davos Diary' from 1902 to 1912. The study also reconstructs the previously only partially explored series "Pictures from Imagination" and highlights its outstanding place as an open concept and as a coherent unit within Kirchner's oeuvre.
