Ulrich Engels' successful book, now appearing in a fundamental new edition, introduces the main problems of syntax through contemporary German and proposes solutions for essential subfields. This syntax of the modern German language is consistently based on dependency theory. The author has adopted the concepts of Lucien Tesnière and enriched them with insights from recent valency research. In six parts, the author addresses all syntax-relevant areas, from words to word groups and sentences to utterances as text elements.
