Many of the methods and tools originally developed for compiler construction have also proven to be extremely useful in other application areas: For example, anyone who wants to systematically convert complexly structured large datasets into another format or who requires a non-trivial command language to handle a software system can efficiently and safely generate the necessary programs using so-called compiler-compilers. Program components generated in this way are easier to adapt to changed requirements than those created by hand. However, solid foundational knowledge in the areas of "syntax analysis" and "attribute evaluation" is a prerequisite for assessing such tools and for their appropriate or even innovative use. The relevant textbook literature falls into three categories: The most comprehensive are the compilers.
