An extremely ambitious project: Markus Heidingsfelder attempts in 'System Pop' to theoretically and fundamentally reconstruct the phenomenon of pop, which cannot be avoided when describing modern society, primarily through a systems theory lens. The ambition lies in the fact that, on one hand, pop represents an intricate mix of music and bodily strategies, subcultures and commerce, self-descriptions and external descriptions, which alone would be a gain to organize; but on the other hand, this organization is achieved with the aid of extraordinarily abstract theoretical tools that are typically associated with the Bielefeld School of Systems Theory and attributed to the name of Niklas Luhmann. The book also clearly demonstrates that the author does not argue from an abstract standpoint, but engages directly with the field he discusses.
