The topic of addiction remains relevant in our culture! Ten years after the first edition, the second, revised, and updated version of this book is now being released. Many of the cultural-critical comments from back then are just as pertinent today. It is certainly a special achievement of systemic therapy that it views addiction and substance use as a social phenomenon: A systemic perspective on addiction allows for different emphases and approaches in treatment and prevention. It makes abstinence as a central treatment goal fundamentally unnecessary and enables a greater focus on the social context, the dynamics of interaction, and relationship patterns rather than solely on the affected individual.
