Fraction arithmetic is considered a challenging area of mathematical education. In particular, the development of a concept of fractions at the beginning of secondary school can be associated with significant difficulties for students. In light of learning psychology theories, the use of interactive learning environments appears promising. Empirical studies also suggest that children can benefit from learning with multimedia content, especially in mathematics and science education. The research project ALICE: Fraction Arithmetic conducted an empirical study in the context of introductory instruction in fractions. For this purpose, an interactive textbook for tablet PCs was developed, which uses images and animations and invites students to experiment. This brochure summarizes the project's contribution to digitalization.
