The Museum of Decorative Arts emerged in the mid-19th century. Its origins are located in England and coincide with an era of increasing industrialization. At that time, collections of decorative art objects served not only as sample collections for manufacturers, craftsmen, and design students but also captivated an international audience at the great world exhibitions. Naheema Daniela Blankenburg provides the first international comparison of significant decorative arts museums. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, and the unique German Wallpaper Museum in Kassel are presented through the common collection item of wallpaper.
