In the 1960s, Dennis Hopper always had his camera with him – on film sets, at parties, while visiting restaurants, bars, and galleries, in the car on the highway, and at political rallies. He photographed film idols, pop stars, writers, artists, his girlfriends, and even complete strangers. In doing so, he captured some of the most significant moments of his generation with an intuitive yet sharp eye. At the epicenter of the cultural upheaval in art, music, and politics, he photographed stars like Tina Turner in her studio, Andy Warhol at his first exhibition on the West Coast, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King during the civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama. The extensive selection in this volume was curated by Hopper himself in collaboration with the gallerist Tony Shafrazi. It brings together the highlights of his career as a photographer.
