Product details

The photographer, teacher, and sociologist Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940) has shaped our visual memory of the American labor world of the early twentieth century like no other with his photographs. As an ethically motivated social reformer, Hine, who primarily worked as a commissioned photographer for charitable, municipal, and governmental organizations, aimed to bring the plight of the underprivileged classes to public attention. His images of steelworkers in Pittsburgh, child labor in cotton mills, factories, coal mines, and fields, as well as newspaper and messenger boys, whose ages varied from about four years depending on their work, along with his pictures of immigrants at Ellis Island and the construction of the Empire State Building, significantly contributed to educating the American public about the social realities in the country. In his later works, Hine changed his approach.
