The subject of the book consists of physical, psychological, and sexual forms of domestic violence against children and parents, women and men. Unlike comparable literature on family violence, this work focuses on the societal history of problematization and the differential reactions to various forms of domestic violence. The socio-cultural and socio-historical context of addressing and problematizing violent behavior in intimate or familial relationships is incorporated into the analysis and explanation of the phenomenon. This reveals gender stereotypes and milieu-specific selectivities in the societal perception of domestic violence, as well as corresponding unintended side effects in its prevention.
