How does internationalization influence interest groups? It is considered influential in two ways: politically, particularly through the influence of the European Union, and economically, through the internationalization of the economy. These two areas especially shape associations. This is examined by comparing several sectors (automotive industry and retail) as well as several countries (Germany, France, Great Britain).

This is also analyzed from the perspective of the European level, the umbrella organizations of the economy, and the development over several decades. It becomes evident that national associations have remained significant actors and that they have been present at the international level and have remained of considerable importance both in the past and today.
