Queensland, Australia's second-largest state, could hardly boast more superlatives. Covering an area of 1.7 million square kilometers, it has developed the greatest diversity of habitats on the Australian continent. Along the coast, you can find steaming rainforests, picturesque waterfalls, and cloud-covered mountains. Traveling inland, the endless, sometimes canyon-riddled plains of the dry red-brown Outback dominate the landscape. The wildlife is correspondingly diverse: whether it's koalas, platypuses, cassowaries, or saltwater crocodiles in the rainforests, or frill-necked lizards, yellow-footed rock wallabies, or the many colorful birds around the waterholes of the Outback - they all find a habitat in Queensland. The Indigenous people have also left their mark. Cape York is home to some of the most interesting rock paintings in Australia. And off the coast stretches the Great Barrier Reef.
