Product details

For several years now, the number of German-language memorial sites on the Internet has been increasing. "Carina unvergessen" is one of many hundreds of memorial websites online. Most often, it is parents who create websites in memory of their deceased children. But what societal causes are there for the shift of mourning work to the Internet? Is there a connection between this digitization and changes in contemporary burial culture? Katrin Gebert explores how mourning and remembrance culture find their expression online. The theoretical foundation of her study is based on the memory theories of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan and Aleida Assmann, and Astrid Erll, as well as ethnological ritual theories. Gebert examines the currently existing online cemeteries, memorial portals, and private memorial sites in the German-speaking Internet. From an ethnological perspective, the author questions the socio-cultural significance of these memorial sites and highlights the context of burial and mourning culture.
