The ancient myth of the demiurge Prometheus or the Cyclops from the Odyssey, the Jewish creation of the Golem, Frankenstein's monster, the evil Mr. Hyde during the Enlightenment, H.R. Giger's Alien, or the Terminator – each era has its own specific conceptions of monsters and artificial humans. These figures of the other body accompany the discourse of the rational and enlightened human; they represent its shadow side. Therefore, the thesis posits that these fantastic designs of the other body can be interpreted as reflections on the project of the Enlightenment. The monsters often symbolize archaic outbursts, animalistic regressions, and the instinctual nature of humanity. In contrast, the ideas of the artificial human reflect the desire for the completion of the Enlightenment, for the perfection of human (and male) rationality.
