Symbolists of the 19th century, such as Arnold Böcklin, Franz von Stuck, and Max Klinger, often gathered mythological hybrids in their paintings. With their strong sensual presence, they vividly represented untamed, instinctual nature. The sphinx and siren compellingly document a connection between passion and death. The motif of the demonic seductress has survived in literature up to the present day. Even in the 19th century, it was not uncommon to draw comparisons to sphinxes or sirens when describing particularly reprehensible or immoral women. Such women included courtesans, educated and socially recognized women who were paid for their romantic services like prostitutes.
