The present study is an ethical reflection on genetic pre-implantation diagnostics (PID) and its biomedical as well as socio-ethical implications. The first scientific part provides insight into the embryological-genetic foundations and gathers the empirical data necessary for the subsequent ethical assessments. A second anthropological part examines what it means to be human and discusses various concepts justifying the protection of prenatal human life. In the third ethical section, fundamental statements about ethics and morality, as well as the state of ethics in a pluralistic society, are made.
