Product details

Several states have committed themselves to the full support of the United Nations in their foreign policy. Particularly, the British Labour government under Tony Blair had made this multilateral approach a hallmark of its public declarations. It claimed to establish nothing less than a new, ethical foreign policy, where national interests are fundamentally defined by international considerations. However, with its contribution to the war in Iraq, which was not sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council, the Labour government notably contradicted its own premise. Here, a unilateral British (Great) Power policy reemerged, which seemed to have been overcome at least since London's disastrous actions during the Suez Crisis in 1956. Fabian Beigang describes Britain's role in the history of the world organization.
