After the catastrophe of World War I, a large part of the writers and visual artists distanced themselves from Expressionism. There was a distrust of any pathos, and they turned to a factual style of representation that aimed to capture reality in a sober and rational manner. Often, the (early) novels of Erich Maria Remarque are assigned to the literature of this New Objectivity without critical examination. In fact, literary studies pay relatively little attention to the writer, which is surprising, as his magnum opus "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1929) was the most successful German-language book of the last century. Denis Herold demonstrates how Remarque concretely employs a new-objective style in terms of form and function. Additionally, his novels are contextualized alongside exemplary works of new-objective authors, and their development is explored.
