The Ballets Russes are considered today to be the groundbreaking ballet event of the early 20th century. From 1909 until his death in 1929, the impresario Sergei Diaghilev presented Russian dancers in ballets in Paris and other cities in Europe, as well as in North and South America, where choreography, music, and stage design were to stand artistically on equal footing. Mikhail Fokine was the first in a series of choreographers who worked for the Ballets Russes; his style would significantly influence 20th-century ballet. One of the first works with which the Ballets Russes embarked on their international triumph in 1909 was the ballet "Cléopâtre," featuring music by Anton Arensky, Sergei Taneyev, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Mikhail Glinka, Alexander Glazunov, and Modest Mussorgsky.
