Product details

The classic journey to Italy as an educational trip for German-speaking intellectuals has a long tradition. Many decades before Goethe explored the artistic treasures of Italy, the country was already very popular among writers. The focus of the Italian trip was a visit to the eternal city of Rome. Venice, on the other hand, was more of a sideline on the route, although countless artistic treasures awaited the culturally eager visitor there as well. Based on this observation, Julia Reimann directs her investigation, which straddles literature and art history, with particular interest towards those writers who incorporated the lagoon city and its formative artists into their texts. Using the most famous Venetian Renaissance painters—Titian, Tintoretto, and Paolo Veronese—the author traces the reception of Venetian Renaissance art in German literature. The central question of the work is whether there are characteristic perspectives of German literature on Venetian art and what these perspectives are like. This results in an overview of the various patterns of reception from the Classical period to the 20th century. The study takes into account notable writers such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe, August von Platen, Theodor Fontane, Gerhart Hauptmann, and Marie Luise Kaschnitz, as well as art historians like Jacob Burckhardt. The examined text material ranges from typical travel reports about Italy to travel guides, poetry, novels, and novellas.
