Authority leaves no one indifferent. The term is contentious due to its ambivalence, its fluctuating history of interpretation, and the various interpretations associated with it. Authority is a provocative term—not just in educational discourse. Those who reflect on authority enter a "doubtful territory." Harald Klingler has taught religion at a secondary school for over twenty years and is the father of two adult children. Based on his personal approach to the topic of authority and its ongoing relevance in societal discourse, Klingler bridges the topic's significance to the field of religious education. Using qualitative-empirical research methods, concepts of authority are reconstructed from the subjective knowledge of religious educators and subsequently discussed.
