What do students do in class? The concept of participation in class is redefined in this study, which is based on long-term classroom observations. The fundamental differentiation between participation and non-participation reveals criteria that provide a new approach to the real issues in teaching, such as performance assessment, grading, boredom, and ultimately the student role as a metaphor for any form of student activity within 45-minute sessions.
