Product details

In September 1937, Erich Maria Remarque met Marlene Dietrich at the Lido in Venice. This encounter marked the beginning of a long, passionate, and dramatic love affair that inspired Remarque to write enchanting and moving love letters. In his love for Marlene Dietrich, from whom he began to distance himself at the end of 1940 without ever completely letting go, Remarque was the "weaker" one. The passion was indeed mutual; both were famous, financially independent, had left Germany, and shared a mutual hatred for the Nazis. Marlene Dietrich perfectly embodied Remarque's ideals but subjected him to constant jealousy. Werner Fuld and Thomas F. Schneider have collected, commented on, and introduced the letters Remarque wrote to Marlene Dietrich, along with the few surviving responses. What distinguishes the letters, in addition to their passion, is their depth in every respect.
