Film analysis initially deals with material visibility, with images that are presented to the eye before they begin to tell a story. In the blind spot of this gaze lies what is subsequently added or imagined to the images through narratives. What images are, and how they are seen and understood, varies with the contexts of both their theoretical design and practical use. However, films are always more or different than visually composed stories. They are narrative unfoldings of imagery - of dynamic complexes of representation that allow for inferences about aesthetic and technical, social and political aspects of the perception and use of images. The studies gathered in this book focus on the works of well-known directors such as Michael Haneke, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, and Ari Folman.
